These writing prompts are something that I think I’m going to keep doing for a long time, not even just in 2019. I love the spontaneous prompts and having to think what would really happen by placing characters into these seemingly impossible scenario combinations. I might even try some new genres next year as well!

Last month’s writing prompt was Fantasy at a Festival. I’ve never written in the fantasy genre before and it was a lot of fun! I love Grit who is a devilish Imp that messes with the main character Adrealee. I can only imagine where that story would go if I were to ever take on the task.

This month, I’ll be taking on an Adventure that is set in the Park.

Let me preface this story by saying I’m sorry. I know I complain a lot about winter, but when this writing prompt came up I couldn’t help but pull from some wintery vibes. I mean who doesn’t have a winter sledding memory? Okay, most of my sledding memories aren’t nearly as fun as depicted in this scene, but I think everyone can relate.

Scenes by Jennifer Leigh is a new segment in 2019 where the scenes have been picked using a random number generator and will be around 400-500 words. I started with a numbered list of different genres and settings I thought would be fun to write about. Then I randomly selected 12 numbers for genres and 12 number for settings. From that list, I found out what my writing prompts were for the year which you can find the list by going to my Fiction Writing tab!

And if you’d like to join and follow these prompts, I’d love for you to link me to your stories either in the comments or via email (boundtowriting@gmail.com) and I’ll showcase your amazing pieces in next month’s post!

Scenes by Jennifer Leigh - April 2019 - Adventure in the Park

Winter Sledding Adventure

Written by Jennifer Leigh

A swirl of white touches against the front yard. Mountains of snow blocks the road. Dad comes in to tell me there’s no school today. But I can’t go back to sleep. Not when there is so much snow to play in.

I watch as Dad shovels the sidewalk in front of our house. A big truck with a plow zooms by taking away the snow that lay untouched.

I bang on the front window to get Dad’s attention. There’s no school; we should be playing in the snow.

Before Dad comes inside, I’ve already dug out my snowsuit and boots hidden in the back of the closet. It’s the first snowfall of the year.

Dad stomps into the front door and I’m waiting for him. My boots are on and I’m all bundled up and ready to go.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Dad asks. He pulls off his snow-covered coat and places it over the dining room chair.

“I want to go sledding down the big hill in the park.”

I can picture how fast I’ll fly down the hill on top of all this snow. The wind in my hair. The snow sticking to my face. Dad pulling me around and I might fall off the sled and into the heaping white surface.

“The roads are not safe to drive right now. But we can walk.”

I jump up with a grin and run to the garage. I push around storage boxes some marked with Mom’s name. My fingers trace the letters. I let the feeling fade and I move the boxes out of the way. The red sled my dad used to use when he was a kid sits against the garage wall.

I pull it from its place and run back into the house to see Dad lacing up his snow boots.

We trek through the cold. The white snow blocking our path. We leap over the mountains. Climb high to the peak. And stop.

Dad places the sled in front of me. He motions for me to sit. I slide into place and look around. There is nothing but white surrounding every inch. My friends laugh and play at the bottom of the high peek I’m sitting on. My stomach churns and I look up at my dad.

He nods. “Are you ready?” He places his hands on the sled.

I grip onto the yellow handles and nod.

The wind rushes through my hair and I’m catapulting down to the ground. The distant laughter coming in closer as I rush towards my friends. My descent comes to an end as the land flattens. My dad racing behind me and he lifts me up. I screech with laughter.

“Again! Again!”

    1. I’m so glad this scene could bring back memories for you! ❤️ This is something I always wanted when I was a kid, but there are no good hills around where I live to make this epic sledding adventure happen. But my dad did pulls us around the park on our sled until we’d fall off, which was a lot of fun!
