These writing prompts are a lot of fun! Every time I sit down to write the next one, I get a new wave of excitement. There is something about the different genres and topics that takes my mind to a better creative space.

Last month’s prompt was Mythology at the Movies and this month, I’m taking on the fantasy genre. This fantasy writing prompt is about a character named Adrealee attending the Queen’s coronation. This is definitely not a genre I have any experience in writing, but boy this prompt was a lot of fun! And I really like the one side character, Grit, which you will get to meet in the story below!

Scenes by Jennifer Leigh is a new segment in 2019 where the scenes have been picked using a random number generator and will be around 400-500 words. I started with a numbered list of different genres and settings I thought would be fun to write about. Then I randomly selected 12 numbers for genres and 12 number for settings. From that list, I found out what my writing prompts were for the year which you can find the list by going to my Fiction Writing tab!

And if you’d like to join and follow these prompts, I’d love for you to link me to your stories either in the comments or via email (boundtowriting@gmail.com) and I’ll showcase your amazing pieces in next month’s post!

March 2019 - Fantasy at a Festival

A Queen’s Coronation Day in Pucaea

written by Jennifer Leigh

Carriages line every side road of the kingdom. It’s the day everyone has been waiting for all year. The Queen’s coronation.

I step outside to a blast of bass thrumming through every branch and bramble surrounding my cottage. If I don’t leave now, I’ll never be able to find Jaks and Azore in the clusters that are probably already surrounding the Queen’s castle.

I push through the brambles and enter the wooded path lined with creatures and cars from the other kingdoms. Jaks said this was going to unite the kingdoms but I didn’t know they would all be in attendance.

“Adrealee, isn’t it dangerous for a siren to be amongst so many people?”

I blush, letting my cheeks lighten before I turn to see the small green creature flutter toward me. “Come on, Grit. It’s not even a funny joke anymore.” I fall behind a group of Ogres stomping toward the castle.

“You know I’m only kidding. Anywho, I heard that the Queen’s coronation is going to be the biggest celebration the kingdom has seen in over a hundred years.” Grit bounces up into the sky.

“Nothing will ever beat the Cyrpus Festival.”

Grit laughs. “You see? And that was 150 years ago. Yet we still talk about it. I’ve overheard some people saying…” Grit’s voice trails off, his eyes transfixed to something in the distance. “Oh look, Adrealee, it’s Xenous. See you at the coronation!” Grit flutters up and through the crowd.

I find Jaks and Azore by the red magnolia tree outside of the Academy’s walls. Classes have been canceled all week in preparation for today.

“Adrealee, what took you so long? The Ethereals started playing already,” Jaks is hanging from the thickest magnolia branch.

“I heard them from my cottage. I was sidetracked by Grit. He always has a story to tell, you know.” I lean up against the tree and let the beat of the drums take over my body.

Azore’s small body flutters around the tree. “Don’t mind him. He’s still upset about not being picked as guarding knight.”

“I would have done a better job than Rico and you both know it.” Jaks slams to the ground.

I ignore my friend. “We can’t see anything from here and I smell hickory burning.”

As we walk towards the castle, the crowds grow thicker. Tents line the dirt path and leaflets of food are positioned to be taken. The music grows louder until we’re facing the tall limestone castle, decorated in the finest fabrics woven by the Weavers. We find a place to stand behind the final food tent.

The Ethereals slow the music until the only noise is the chatter of everyone around the castle. It is time for the coronation.
