Building a Realistic Character

2 Comments on Building a Realistic Character

You want to write a character that is as real as someone you care about. A character that people can picture meeting in real life. The problem is that creating realistic characters can be a challenge. Getting the intricacies of a complex human written out on paper can be tricky. However, I have something that may be able to help this challenge of creating realistic characters.

When it comes down to the basic elements of getting to know your character, it’s like meeting a new friend. You need to ask questions and get to know them. The same goes for the characters living in your head. The difference? A new friend is someone you don’t write about. You don’t need other people to understand who they are as people. A character, on the other hand, you need to completely understand so you can make them realistic to your reader.

So how do you get to know your characters?

To help with this, I’ve developed a character detail workbook. I’ve taken my years of research and my experience creating characters to create an in-depth form to help you create realistic characters from scratch. Surface-level and deep questions make up this 10-page Main Character Detail Workbook for only $6.99 USD.

Want something less intense for side characters? There is also a 6-page Support Character Detail Workbook for $3.99 USD that covers the basics to get just enough information to create realistic side characters. Both of these workbooks are available as digital downloads on the Bound to Writing Etsy Shop along with other resources.

What’s Included on the Character Detail Workbooks:

Physical Appearance

Dive into how your character looks from their hair all the way to the clothing they wear.

Relationships

Explore the relationships your character has with other people. From family to friends to loves, discover everything your character feels about these people.

The Past

(Exclusively for the Main Character Detail Workbook)

The past affects us all in different ways. Know what your character went through so you know how that affects their personality in the present.

Personality

Figure out your character’s personality by diving into their traits, dreams, and fears. What drives them to be who they are?

So much can be discovered when you look into your character’s life. Develop a realistic character by taking the time to look into the small details that make up that character. From planning how they look to diving into their past, complex characters can be created.

Now go ahead and check out the Character Detail Workbooks on the Bound to Writing Etsy Shop that I’ve created to help you in the character development phase of writing. They won’t disappoint in aiding your character creation in all the details you never thought you needed to know about the character living in your head.

Until next time, keep writing!

  1. In my writing of my novels, I only write about characters who I feel are real. I’m not a fantasy writer Although I have thought about writing a young child’s story. Which I might try someday.
