A Mysterious Escape Room – Mystery Writing Prompt

3 Comments on A Mysterious Escape Room – Mystery Writing Prompt

It’s been quite some time since the last time I wrote from a writing prompt. A few months ago, I created a random writing prompt generator. I haven’t had the chance to use it yet. Today I’m changing this by using my own generator to help spark some writing inspiration!

You see, it’s been months since I’ve worked on a writing project. It’s been a rough few months, but I’m ready to get back into my projects now that life has settled into a new routine. With that, I’m in need of some writing inspiration to help jumpstart my journey back into my writing projects.

When I went to my writing prompts page, I was generated this mystery writing prompt:

Genre: Mystery

Setting: Escape Room

Character Personality: Introvert

I think this is something I can work with! Read on to see what my take on this mystery writing prompt is.

I challenge you to write a 300-500 word scene that uses all the elements of this prompt. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

If you’ve written from a prompt and want to share it with me, email me at boundtowriting@gmail.com. I’d love to see your work Together we can be inspired!

Introvert in a Mysterious Escape Room Writing Prompt

On days like this, I wish I was at home under my comforter watching TV. I wouldn’t know what to watch, but anything has to be better than being locked in a detective’s office for an hour with seven other people.

My friend, Devon told me that it would be us and a couple of her other friends. I was thinking two other people. Usually I wouldn’t have a problem with this random group outing, but as I watch the timer count down I feel an anxiousness wash over me.

I think I’ve solved one of the clues. Devon is across solving another clue and I need someone to help me align the wooden ticket pieces that should open the desk drawer. One of Devon’s friends is near me but I don’t recall her name and I don’t want to shout across the office for Devon.

I stand in front of the wooden desk pretending to still solve the puzzle when Devon comes over.

She looks at the ticket pieces on the wall that match the clues on the desk. “Do you have something?”

“I need you to hold these pieces,” I point to the pieces on the wall, “while I press these buttons.” I point to the two red buttons on the desk.

“Are you sure that’s going to work?” Devon raises an eyebrow.

“Of course it’s going to work. Now are you going to help me?” I place my hands on the buttons.

Devon takes her spot at the wall and does exactly what I say. The tickets align perfectly. When I hit the button I hear a click. But instead of the desk drawer opening up like I thought would happen, the bookcase behind the door slides open leading to a long dark passageway. We cheer which gets the attention of the other girls.

“Let’s see where this goes,” Devon’s friend Sherry says.

Devon and I are the first ones through the door. Before the other girls have a chance the door slides closed. The light diminishes as the last sliver of the room is shut from our view.

“What’s going on?” I ask out into the dark void. I know the game master must be listening to us. They are supposed to help if we get caught on a puzzle.

There is no answer. There is no clock. We are alone in this long dark hallway.

What a great way to get myself back into the creative mind space. I hope you had a good time reading this small scene that I’ve written.
