I’m a sucker for a friends-to-lovers romance. Today, I’m going to share with you why What Are Friends For? should be your next read if you are too!

I love this type of romance mostly because it resembles my own life. I fell in love with one of my best friends from elementary school. Now, we’ve been married for almost 1 year! So I absolutely love seeing books where best friends fall in love.

When I came across What Are Friends For? I knew that I needed to read it ASAP. And being that it just released in January, I’m so happy to say I read it as soon as I got it! Now let me tell you why I fell in love with this book.

Goodreads Synopsis: FALLING IN LOVE ISN’T COMPLICATED…UNLESS IT’S WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND.

A close, easygoing friendship can all change with just one kiss.Seventeen-year-old Remi Beaufort learns this the hard way when she plays a blindfolded kissing game at a party.

She thinks she’s kissing Jeremy, the totally hot basketball player she’s been crushing on. And the kiss…it’s amazing. Heart-stopping, world-changing, toe-curling. The kiss makes her forget about her overbearing mother, the next-door neighbor’s drama, and the probability that she’ll fail her senior year. The best kiss of her life makes all that fall away.

Until her blindfold falls off, and she realizes that instead of kissing her crush, she’s kissing Elijah, her best friend since third grade.

Though she manages to convince Elijah that he was kissing his girlfriend, Remi can’t get the thought of his lips on hers out of her head. As things between them grow more and more complicated–because it turns out her fantasizing about his mouth is more of a problem than it sounds–Remi has to make a choice: does she live the rest of her life loving her best friend in secret? Or does she tell the truth and risk ruining their friendship forever?

Review

In my quest to read more indie published books this year, I came across Sarah Sutton on Instagram. When I read the description for this book, I knew I would enjoy it. But I had no idea just how much I would end up loving it!

Initial Thoughts

Within the first few sentences of What Are Friends For? I knew I would be hooked. The premise of the book and the first scene we get to read have me excited for what is to come for Remi and Elijah.

Plot

In typical friends-to-lovers fashion, there is an event that changes the tide of the relationship for both Remi and Elijah. However, with other life stressors things escalate in directions you would never see coming.

What’s great about the plot of this book is that it is always moving as a steady pace. There is never a time that it feels dull.

Characters

What’s not to love about the characters in What Are Friends For? From the banter between Remi and Elijah, to the difference in relationships they share, there is something to love about everyone we meet in this book.

Remi is a strong-willed character that thinks too hard about love. Which at one point does annoy me, but I won’t spoil the reason why.

Elijah is Remi’s best friend and you can immediately feel the love between them. He is such a gentle character with many layers of family drama and his love for art.

The other characters include: Remi’s mom, Remi’s dad, Remi’s step-mom and step-sister, Eloise, Jeremy, Savannah, and Elijah’s family. Each play an important role in allowing Remi grow and mature throughout the story.

Overall

What Are Friends For? is definitely on my top list of 2020 reads. It takes the friends-to-lovers romance in directions I have never seen before. From the beginning, I loved the dynamics between the characters. Even when things start to derail, it is great to see how the characters work through everything. This page-turner of a book kept me reading into the wee hours of the night which is something that never happens. This debut by Sarah Sutton is absolute perfection. I look forward to whatever she publishes in the future.
