The 12 Days of Editing

5 Comments on The 12 Days of Editing

We may only be a few days until Christmas, but who says we can’t count down another important thing in our lives? Editing plays a HUGE role in our lives as writers. I mean editing takes up at least 90 percent of the writing process.

So to honor the holidays we’re going to do a countdown of the 12 things we dislike about editing our books.

  1. Finding the right order of words so readers will understand what you mean.
  2. Having to fix an entire scene or chapter because it isn’t working. – Cameron
  3. Walking away and realizing your book doesn’t edit itself.
  4. Digging deeper plot holes.
  5. Problem characters.
  6. Being a kind person in real life, but a serial killer in fiction because the characters won’t behave.
  7. Why are my characters always smiling?!
  8. Why do my characters only eat the same meal?!
  9. My plot holes keep getting bigger!
  10. I can finally see the light out of the plot hole. Oh wait, nevermind.
  11. Does this really important character who disappears in part 2 really need to be in the story?
  12. Formatting the final copy.

This post is supposed to be light-hearted, but as writers, we know the difficulty of the writing process. We all enjoy different parts of the editing and writing process, but it doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with it.

Keep on writing and editing your work. It may not look like it now, but it will definitely be worth it in the end. Sometimes your story needs more edits or an entire rewrite to be the story you see in your mind. That’s okay! Don’t let that stop you from finishing your book. There will be someone that wants to or needs to read your story.

Have a wonderful holiday!
