I was recommended What Light by Jay Asher by my sister, who practically threw the book at me to read. She thought it was a great Christmas-time read and I was looking for a Christmas-themed book. Figuring I take her advice and read the book, I picked it up.
What Light follows Sierra, a girl from Oregon that travels to California one month of the year to sell Christmas trees with her family. Simple, right? But she lives a completely separate life in California. Well up until this season anyway. Caleb has a bad reputation in this small town, but Sierra sees past this. She helps Caleb find forgiveness and they both discover something they’ve never had before: true love.
To be honest, this is my first Jay Asher book. I’ve always heard of 13 Reasons Why, but never had any desire to read it. I found that I liked Asher’s writing, but after the spoilers from the Netflix series, I still have no desire to read 13 Reasons Why. Sorry.
But this is not a review of that book so let’s get onto the review of What Light.
Things I Like:
I’m not even sure that’s a real word, but I’m going with it! This book screams Christmas. I mean it takes place on a Christmas tree lot for crying out loud. It made me so happy to sit around and stare at my small Christmas tree that’s in my room. Which happens to be the background of the book picture above!
I think I’ve found my weakness in books. Cute guy. Confident. Witty. Impulsive. I love it! I loved Caleb from the beginning when he was first introduced. He’s so realistic and I would love to read a story that is narrated by him.
How can a Christmas story about love and forgiveness not be cute? Can’t disagree with me? My point exactly! There is so much in the book that makes you go AWE! I fell for the characters as the book progressed and I wanted more from them well after the story ended. Did it really have to end?
Things I Don’t Like:
Not going to lie, it took me a lot of time to get into this book. It had a very slow going to get into the main plot of the book. I didn’t mind it too much, except that some of the information seemed irrelevant to the story. Once the story picked up, it went full speed and was very quick.
The Main Character (until the end)
Sierra is the main character and I honestly liked her at the end of the book. In the beginning, she seems very whiny and not relatable. This may have to do with the slow start this book had, but again I did end up liking her.
Overall, What Light is a cute Christmas read perfect for the holiday season. It’s full of love and forgiveness that will make your heart melt. It has a slow beginning, but a very fast middle and ending make up for that. The writing is well done and I would enjoy reading more by Jay Asher. If you’re looking for a Christmas read, I would consider checking this one out! I give What Light…
