Bewitching Hannah - Leigh Goff review

I found out about Bewitching Hannah on a Facebook page, and the description reeled me in. It has been a long time since the last time I read about the supernatural. It also is a nice change of pace from the dystopian books I’ve been reading.

Bewitching Hannah follows Hannah whose parents have died and is going to live with her Aunt in Annapolis. She has been trying to suppress her magical powers, but nothing can compete against fate. She learns of a prophecy that states of the death of one witch at the hands of another. Hannah must learn to control her magic before the prophecy comes into play.

This book is a good read about a witch going through self-discovery while handling everyday life. Here is my review.

Things I Like:

  • Hannah’s Voice

From the very first page, I knew I would like Hannah. She came off as spunky but stubborn and I loved it. I cheered her on through every difficulty she faced and was disappointed when she didn’t believe in herself (luckily that was only through the beginning part of the book).

  • Detailed

The detail in this book is great! I feel immersed in the places that the author writes about. Between the actual place and the supernatural events that are conjured, I feel it as if I were there. Also, the different emotions between the characters are well described. Whether it was friends, family, love, hate, and everything in between, I could feel the emotions that the characters felt. I enjoyed the depth the author went into for this book.

  • Action Scenes

There are a lot of action scenes in Bewitching Hannah. Some are minor, but all lead up to the final battle. I enjoy the way each of these scenes are written. They were subtle but also extremely powerful. You could see the intensity grow with each scene.

Things I Don’t Like:

  • Super Cryptic

At the very beginning, everyone is cryptic. No one wants to tell Hannah what is going on. Instead, she finds out when it is convenient, or when everything is going downhill. If I read that ‘it’s not important right now,’ one more time I probably would’ve rated this book half a star lower. Lucky for everyone, halfway through the book, this no longer is an issue.

  • Unsaid Information

This book takes place in an area surrounded by people with varying supernatural abilities. However, no one talks about this. It felt like an unsaid rule that no one talked about their abilities. It is weird and feels very awkward.

  • Formatting Breaks

Now I had an ebook copy of this book. Maybe it is formatted correctly for the physical copy. I’m not sure. There were times that a paragraph would randomly split. Other times the section break image is of a raven and it is randomly put into the text. It didn’t matter if the section did break or not. The raven would just be in the text.

Overall, Bewitching Hannah is a magical journey into self-discovery. Hannah and the other characters are well developed, and the writing style keeps me intrigued. The action scenes are just the right amount of action and suspense. I can’t wait to read more by Leigh Goff! I give Bewitching Hannah. . .

  1. That’s one of the things that gets to me, when things are just too vague… can definitely become a little bit of a nuisance, but everything else sounds interesting enough to check out 🙂

  2. I one time had a book, an ARC, that was formatted really weird. I let the book tour people know and they contacted the author who didn’t know a mistake had been made and the wrong file was uploaded. So it’s possible that a mistake was made that way,

    1. Thanks for this. I’ve read some weird formatted books before I started blogging that I didn’t even think about it.
